How to Maintain a Sound Mind
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and a sound mind."
2 Timothy 1:7

The Bible is replete with various descriptions of the mind such as:
the troubled mind, a depraved mind,  a sinful mind, a dull mind, a wicked mind, a corrupt mind and a sound mind.

Knowing the importance of the mind to our existence and destiny, the devil has been battling to gain control of our minds. In the passage under review, Apostle Paul posits that God has given us the spirit of a "sound mind"; He has not given us the spirit of a "dull mind". The Bible says that we have the mind of Christ. And the mind of Christ is not a dull, wicked, fearful or sinful mind.

Beloved, you are not a dullard, rather you are smart and intelligent! You have a sound mind that can reason or rationalize your way out of every quagmire. Don't forget, even the prodigal son at the height of his self-inflicted suffering was able to secure a change of story via his rational reasoning.

The Bible says, "And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my fathers have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger I will arise and go to my father and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,"
Luke 15:17-18

What is a sound mind?
From a layman's explanation, a sound mind is your ability or capacity to think, reason, and understand yourself and your environment. Mad people don't think well or understand themselves or their environment. I'm of the candid conviction that a sound mind is your greatest asset.

Let's consider 3 important ways to maintain a sound mind:

1. Guard your mind diligently!
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23

Do you know that, like computers, it is what you garbage into your mind that you will garbage out?  You better watch what you allow into your mind! As a Christian, if you put worldly things in your mind, you cannot get spiritual results out. Never! What do you think about? Godly thoughts or ungodly thoughts? Watch over your thoughts and ensure you are always thinking godly thoughts. Don't allow the devil to flood your thoughts with sinful and negative stuff.

Always examine and ask yourself: “Am I thinking evil or good thoughts? Would Jesus allow these thoughts? Would God be glorified? Would I be pleased to see the results of my thoughts?"

2. Let your mind dwell on the Word!
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom..." Colossians 3:16

If you are saturated with the Word, your mind will be guarded and guided by the Word of God! David said, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."
Psalms 119:11

When you allow the Word of God to work in your mind, the word keeps you from sins; it defends your mind from demonic attacks, and it shields you from arrows the enemy may try to shoot in your direction to arouse a spirit of fear inside you. You will experience perfect peace if your mind is focused on God and His Word.

The Bible says, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Isaiah 26:3

3. Have the mind of Christ
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:" Philippians 2:5

One of the easiest ways to maintain a sound mind is to think like Christ.
God has blessed you with a sound mind, it is now your duty to task your mind or brain to produce results like Christ. Christ thought humility and He exhibited humility. He thought love, and He became love personified. Do you want to maintain a sound mind like Christ? Then try by all means to engage your mind productively like Him.

I decree and declare that you will be empowered by God to maintain a sound mind 24/7 in Jesus mighty name!

Yours sincerely,
Joe Jesimiel Ogbe
