Understanding Submission

"And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands."Genesis 16:9

These days many believers are finding it difficult to submit to higher authorities. Even servants are not prepared to submit to their masters anymore, as if submission is derogatory. It is God's will or desire to we submit to one another.

In the passage under review, the angel of the Lord instructed Hagar to return to Sarah, her mistress and submit to her authority. If submission is not the design of God, His angel would not have given the instruction.

What is submission?

Submission is the action of accepting, submitting or yielding to a superior force or to the authority or will of another person. It is the willingness to be under another's control. Submission is not subjugation. I mean, it is not about being subdued or coerced by force to submit.

Submission is not just about the less submitting to the superior, as the Bible enjoins us to submit ourselves to one another in the fear of God. (Ephesians 5:21)

Submission is about humility and meekness. Our Lord Jesus Christ humbled Himself and submitted to God. The Bible says,

"And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all."1 Corinthians 15:28

Submission becomes easy when we are clothed with humility. Are you a humble person?
As a matter of priority, it is germane to submit to the following persons:

1. Parents!
"One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;"1 Timothy 3:4

2. Masters!
"Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward."1 Peter 2:18

3. Husbands!
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord." Colossians 3:18

4. Leaders!
"Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;" 1 Peter 2:13
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."Romans 13:1

5. Christ and God
"Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing."Ephesians 5:24
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."James 4:7

I pray that God will give you the grace to embrace submission with the humility of heart in Jesus mighty name.

Yours sincerely,
Joe Jesimiel Ogbe
