The Worth of Mentorship

"Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you." Philippians 4:9

Who is a mentor?
A mentor is a guide or a coach! He or she is an experienced colleague, leader, teacher, pastor and a role model who is willing to share his or her wealth of experience, knowledge and skills with their mentees or proteges.

In the passage under review, Apostle Paul is our perfect example of a worthy mentor, called on his followers to emulate him. Mentors are exemplary leaders!

In essence, he is saying loud and clear,
"I'm available to mentor you. See me as your role model, and follow my example."
A true mentor is interested in helping his mentees unlock their dormant potential. He is interested in their going forward in life. I am a beneficiary of mentorship! My mentor and father in the Lord, Dr David Oyedepo helped me to unlock my potential in ministry at a time I never knew how to run a full time ministry.

He saw and unlocked things in me that I didn’t even know existed. My appreciable ministry progress is a function of what I have learnt from him.

3 vital keys to unlocking mentorship grace and blessings:

1. Submission
Submission is our willingness to accept or yield ourselves to the authority of our mentors. The Bible says,
"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder..."1 Peter 5:5

A mentee who feels he knows better cannot submit. No proud mentee has a future! Imagine a foootballer feeling he knows better than his coach. That footballer will never make progress career wise!

To benefit maximally from our mentors, we must be willing and prepared to submit ourselves to their leadership. God is interested in how we submit to our mentors!

In Genesis16:8 -9, Hagar, Sarai's maid, was instructed by the angel of the Lord to return and "submit thyself under her hands."

No matter how good a coach or mentor is, if you do not submit to him, he will not be able to add value to you. Wisdom is in submission!

2. Belief
To benefit from your mentor, you must have trust, faith or confidence in him or her. Mentors are like prophets who guide God's people to the paths of prosperity.

The Bible says, "... Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper." 2 Chronicles 20:20

Faith in your mentor is validated by how you take his instructions or advice. You must not doubt his competence or intentions toward you!

3. Honour
Many mentors are rare gems as such they should command great respect or high esteem from their mentees. Do you know that many services rendered by mentors are simply priceless? Do you also know that footballers earn more salaries than their coaches? As such, it's not about money. Their worth or value is not tied to monetary gains. Not at all! What do we owe them? Honour! Honour! The Bible says,
"Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;"
Ephesians 6:2
In your dealings with your mentor let honour be your watchword. Please do not forget their birthdays and special anniversaries. Honour them with quality and special gifts!
"Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary." Acts 28:10

I decree and declare that you will make impact this year via viable mentorship in Jesus mighty name!
Yours sincerely,
